Ownership transfer step by step

The papers buyers and sellers need in Sri Lanka.

Before you pay

  • Check the original Certificate of Registration (CR book) and that the chassis and engine numbers match the car
  • Check the seller’s NIC matches the owner in the CR book
  • Ask whether the car is under lease. If it is, the leasing company must release it first

Papers you’ll need

  • Original CR book
  • Transfer form (MTA-6), signed by the seller and the buyer
  • Copies of both NICs
  • Valid revenue licence and emission test certificate

At the Department of Motor Traffic

Submit the papers at the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) and pay the transfer fee. The new CR book is issued in the buyer’s name.

Rules and fees can change, so check the DMT website or call them before you go.

Stay safe

Never hand over the CR book or keys before you’re paid in full. Never pay an advance for a car you haven’t seen.
