How to read a Japanese auction sheet
Grades, damage codes and mileage, explained simply.
What it is
Most reconditioned cars in Sri Lanka were bought at auctions in Japan. Before each sale, an inspector writes an auction sheet: the car’s grade, mileage and every mark on the body.
Ask the seller for the auction sheet and check that its chassis number matches the car.
The overall grade
- S or 6: almost new
- 5 and 4.5: very good, few marks
- 4: good, normal small marks
- 3.5 and 3: used, more marks or wear
- R, RA or 0: the car has had accident repairs. Not always bad, but the price should be lower and the repair should be checked.
Interior grade
A letter from A (like new) to E (poor) shows the condition inside the car.
Damage codes on the car drawing
- A1, A2, A3: scratches (1 small, 3 large)
- U1, U2, U3: dents
- W: repaired or repainted area
- S: rust · C: corrosion
- X: part needs replacing · XX: part was replaced
Compare these marks with the car you see. New paint where the sheet shows no damage is a warning sign.
Mileage
The sheet shows the mileage at auction. The car today should show the same number plus a small amount. If the odometer shows less than the sheet, walk away.
