Is the hybrid battery healthy?

Why it matters

The hybrid battery is the most expensive part of a hybrid car. A weak battery means poor fuel economy and a big repair bill.

Simple checks

• No hybrid warning lights on the dashboard
• The car drives in EV mode at low speed when the battery is charged
• The battery gauge doesn’t jump from full to empty
• The battery cooling fan (often near the back seat) isn’t blocked or very loud
• Ask whether the battery has been replaced or repaired

Get it scanned

A mechanic can read the battery health with a scanner. Ask for this before you pay.
